I considered becoming a librarian as my career at one point. I loved to read so much and actually when I was a little kid I used to daydream about being a glamorous rock and roll librarian, sort of akin to Parker Posey’s character in the movie ‘Party Girl’. I was interested in costumes and clothes and makeup and I knew that librarians were traditionally mousy and considered boring. I wasn’t sure if I could be a librarian like that but I thought I might be one if I could still be glamorous at the same time. I did not ultimately choose to become a librarian but a couple of women I knew in college did.
They both were learning a lot about information sharing, writing guide, and seeking information over the internet way before most people even knew about the internet. One of them taught writing resources classes on the internet after she got her degree and started to work for a community college. She loved her job. She said it was very strange in ways though because she went to the same unusual college I did where one on one contact was very important. She never met any of her internet students until the end of the quarter and she said she felt a little bad about this. She was a faceless voice off in technology land to her students in a way. She said that she thought that many of her writing technology students took the course because they thought it would be easier than a regular classroom course. She thought it was somewhat easier since you never had to travel anywhere to study and you submitted all of your homework assignments using e-mail. She told me that once she got used to her job as teacher from afar she got a lot more comfortable with it and enjoyed herself. She also taught hands on classes in information gathering and writing resources, and she did say she enjoyed those much more because she actually got to know each of her students.
