When first attending college part of my experience in the program I entered was that of having to write a paper about a book we had read one time a week. I went to an unusual school where you could cater your curriculum to your own tastes pretty individually. You were not obligated to take requirements unless they corresponded to the academic path you were on, and if you would need them later to further your education. For example if you were pre-med then the school told you what course of study you should follow.
If you were studying more open ended types of careers such as the performing arts which are what I ended up studying the most, you could customize your educational experience so it didn’t contain the things you especially disliked such as writing papers. This was true for me. I prefer to write creative things rather than analyze books I read where I have to make forced connections to the other things I am also studying that week. Of course almost anyone could use some writing help.
For one of my final projects I wrote several hundred pages of short true stories that my sponsor read. He loved my writing and also appreciated my poetry and lyrics – I was also working on some projects where he got to see those as well. He wanted me to write a paper that quarter though and I reluctantly agreed. I figured it would give me some writing help even though he himself wasn’t a writer he was primarily a musician.
Ironically he was the person who was reading my creative writing. He had commented on this and thought it was funny. He was more used to critiquing papers which is I suppose why he wanted me to write one. When I did write my paper that quarter and turned it in, it really wasn’t very helpful because I don’t enjoy writing papers in that style. He couldn’t believe that the same person who had written the creative pieces had written the paper. But it was definitely me. I explained to him that it wasn’t because I wasn’t a good writer, it probably was mostly due to the fact that I preferred to do other sorts of writing and doing something I don’t really enjoy does not work well for me either in school or out of school.
